Edge™ is a hardened appliance positioned at the perimeter of the mail system, controlling email traffic at the network border rather than at the mail server or desktop. Edge uses TrustedSource®, Secure Computing's best-in-class reputation system, for information about every sender, to allow or reject email before it even reaches your critical mail servers. Edge provides the following benefits:

True throughput
Secure Computing IronMail Edge is scalable to meet the needs of organizations of any size, with true throughput capabilities of three million email messages per box, per hour. The measure of true throughput includes receiving the connection request, performing a TrustedSource™ query, and handling the message as discussed above.
Failsafe delivery
Secure Computing Edge is interoperable with all existing mail security gateways and mail servers. Additional functionality provides round-robin load balancing and fail-over between next hops for all mail gateways. If all mail gateways are unavailable, Edge will write the messages to disk, and will reattempt delivery intermittently until a mail gateway is available.

Powerful Messaging Protection
The global reputation service provided by TrustedSource™ allows Edge to allow or reject email messages based on a number of algorithms and analysis, including:
- LDAP rejection – messages addressed to individuals not included in the corporate LDAP are automatically dropped
- IP reputation – messages from known bad senders are automatically dropped
- Message reputation – messages containing known bad content (even if the sender is unknown) are automatically dropped
- Anti-virus signature – messages containing viruses identified by the anti-virus signature file are automatically dropped
- Directory harvest attacks – connection is closed after a defined number of rejections due to invalid recipient address is reached
- Traffic shaping – messages from unknown IP senders are restricted to smaller bandwidths - good traffic won’t be bottlenecked
